Poem of the Week Routine

 

Before starting the unit on poetry, discuss how poetry is different from regular writing.
Have students take the poetry "pledge".

Monday Focus: Inferencing / Metacognitive Markers

Read poem to yourself or with a partner

Infer… what do you think this poem is about

Draw a mental picture to go with your poem

 

Tuesday Focus: Identify Verbs

verbs (past, present, and future)

 

Wednesday Focus: Identify Nouns

nouns (singular/plural, common/proper)

 

Thursday Focus: Study the poem

Look for Antonyms & Synonyms

                                              words that are opposite (antonyms) or similar (synonyms) in meaning

 

Friday Focus: Identify Adjectives

adjectives (e.g., descriptive: old, wonderful; articles: a, an, the)
