Vocabulary Fun


Read two - three definitions and then write down the definition in your own worlds with a picture.

Frayer Model:

Explicit Vocabulary Routine

 

  1.  Introduce the word.

     Write the word on the board or show it on a screen.

     Pronounce the word or guide students in using their decoding skills to determine the pronunciation of the word.

     Say the syllables of the word slowly. Draw attention to recently taught spelling patterns.

     Have students pronounce the word, repeating the word a number of times if the word is unfamiliar or difficult to pronounce.

 

  1. Provide a quick, student-friendly explanation of the word.

     Be sure that the definition contains only known words and is easy to understand.

 

  1. Illustrate with examples.

     Concrete

     Display/explore real objects

     Quickly sketch a picture

     Provide an example drawing on background knowledge

 

  1. Check for Understanding

     Ask “deep processing questions”.

     Have students discern between examples and non-examples.

     Model using the words in spoken sentences.

     Encourage students to use the words in spoken sentences.

     Encourage students to find the words in their own reading, environment, or listen for it in various media sources (TV, radio, internet).

     Encourage students to engage in conversations with their family about the words.

     Challenge students to use the words in their writing.
