Dialogue
Learning Target: I can use dialogue in my writing while using correct capitalization and punctuation.
Introduce students to dialogue writing by watching "Peter's Chair video". Stop the video and point out dialogue when it appears. After watching the video create an anchor chart about dialogue for the students. Remind students that we briefly discussed dialogue at the beginning of the school year when we learned about "Great Beginnings".
Guided Practice: Read aloud a short story or your current read aloud in class. Talk
about telling sentences and talking sentences and have students try to
determine which sentences are telling ones and which ones were talking. After discussing the differences model how to write dialogue between two characters on a white board.
Independent Practice: Have students pick two character cards and create a short story with dialogue. Send
the students back to their seats. Walk around and observe the students as they
work on completing the assignment. Monitor the students as they work, making
sure the sentences are done correctly. Answer any questions students may have
to help them clarify any misconceptions they may have.
