Word Work in the classroom
Second graders like routine and it's important to have consistency throughout the school year. It helps to set up a routine that way second graders know what to expect and the classroom flows smoothly. Pictured below is my weekly Word Work routine:
Each Monday I send a spelling list home that looks like this:
My outline for the school year:
In my classroom we use manipulatives for hands on learning while working in stations. Some things we use are index cards, homemade cards and magnetic letters. I have students categorize words by beginning sounds / ending sounds or patterns such as -ed and -ing words etc. After students sort words I generate open ended questions and ask my class to think of other words that might rhyme or fit the pattern. Such as bl_ what else begins with bl_ .... blue, bloom, bl_ ....
We may also go in into contextualization and discuss previous learning such as contractions, synonyms and antonyms. Look into books, students own writing and find more examples.
