Sight Words for 1st Grade

Teaching / Learning high-frequency words is important because it makes up 50% of all words in text. It is important to review them daily by either placing them on a word wall or reading them within text. Learning some spelling rules and consonant clusters area great way to get started. Students appear to often struggle with the “th” sound and introducing the sounds that “th” makes is beneficial. In my classroom we have a poster copy of all the consonant clusters on the wall and students can refer to it whenever needed. We also review our consonant clusters 2-3 times a week. If they struggle with a sound a remind them to refer to the poster and find the sound. We spend 2-3 minutes explicitly reviewing that sound and then move on.

If the student continues to struggle with the word. I write in down on an index card and draw lines between the sounds, sometimes cutting them apart is more meaningful to the student. We practice the individual sounds and then place them back together – depending on the sight word. We also add the words to our notebook with a picture and then eventually move on to adding the word to a sentence. Repeating these steps daily has been beneficial to my students learning.
