Life with EBRs often feels like you’re going nowhere.  Use the Connectivity Average to marvelously spotlight growth pathways.
Once a week, score your relationship with every student.  How happy do you feel about the development of your connections?  Here’s the scale used by WBT experts:
1:  Very Unhappy
2:  Unhappy
3:  Mixed
4:  Happy
5:  Very Happy
Assign a score to each student, add up the points, divide by the number of pupils, and then multiply by 20.  This last step is crucial.  If you finish with an an average of 4 you might feel like you’re doing well … but multiplying by 20 turns your score into 80 … clarifying room for improvement
Record your Connectivity Average and then pick one or two kids to build bonds with in the coming week. EBRs’ problem is that school is a confining world, an institutional straitjacket.  Outside of class they can speak when they want, move how they choose, follow their passions.  School is not like that.  At all.
Let that sink in.  EBRs natural environment is a free roaming world.  In class, they sit in desks, feet shackled, hands bound, and get a verbal smack when they speak.  Jack’s preferred rule, every human’s preferred rule, is do as you please.
Our most powerful EBR strategy is also the simplest.  Find your kids’ Secret Sauce.  Jack thinks all day about Mario Brothers.  Maria dreams of Rainbow Ponies.  Talk to students as often as possible about their magnetic interests.  Find daily routes off Redirection Highway.
Remove your teaching hat.  Discover your kids’ passions.  Secret Sauce ‘em.  Join troubled kids in their happiest world.
