Classroom Behavior

How to reset behavior in the classroom after a long break:

That first week of school it’s important to go over rules and procedures just like you did at the beginning of the school year. Every time a new student enrolls in your class – stop what you are doing, make introductions and review the rules and procedures again. Encourage more intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic. Students need to do what is right because it’s the right thing to do. If you do what is right, it makes your heart happy.

 Skills students need to learn:

1. Following Rules

2. Taking turns

3. Being Friendly

4. Teamwork

5. Structure

6. Accepting Responsibility

7. Leadership Skills

8. Problem Solving

9. Empathy

10. Critical Thinking

Students develop in different ways and in order to be successful sometimes it takes extra time. Areas that need to be met are: Emotional, Social, Cognitive and Ethical Development.

“If some students are UNRESPONSIVE maybe you can’t teach them yet, but you can love them. And if you love them today, maybe YOU CAN TEACH THEM TOMORROW.” – Tiffany R. Holland

Some students have different needs than others and sometimes some students may need extra help - "Different friends need different types of special help".  Sometimes when other students notice that a specific child gets something extra, they say’ “That’s NOT Fair!” they are quick at saying that. As a teacher it’s important that we let them know that you don’t always get what you want, but that you get what you need.

One of my students created his own rewards chart. Love his drawings.

Ways to talk to students when they misbehave, remember tone matters! “Please Stop”, “That made me sad”, “I don’t like that”, or “That makes my heart sad”.
